Dou Xiankang: I think that China's technology has made great progress. When SARS happened in 2003, gene sequencing was not done by us. After the occurrence of the new coronavirus, we took the lead in gene sequencing and shared it with the world. For our country to become a strong country, the development of science and technology is a very important part.
I suggest that no matter what kind of difficulties the economy encounters this year, the state's investment in the construction of "double first-class" universities and the National Natural Science Foundation of China cannot be reduced, because this involves the basics of technology and education. Only in this way can we ensure that the cultivation of high-end talents and basic scientific research remain at a high level.
Beiqing Daily: How is Hubei's investment in Wuhan University?
Dou Xiankang: In the face of economic difficulties in Hubei Province and Wuhan City, the Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government still promised to give Wuhan University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology 400 million yuan each year for the construction of a “double first-class” university without any diminishment of money Thanks to Hubei Province and Wuhan City.

Beiqing Daily: How is the learning situation of Wuhan University students?
Dou Xiankang: This semester is mainly based on online courses. Graduates complete the learning tasks through online courses, and also complete the thesis defense through the network.
Getting graduates to graduate on schedule is just the goal. As early as March, we have conducted a research and judgment, requiring the undergraduate college and graduate school to complete the relevant graduation work of the fresh graduates through online courses and online defense. Normally, all undergraduates will complete the entire online defense at the end of the month, and the graduation process will be completed. Students of other grades in the school have a high probability of completing their learning tasks through online courses this semester.
For master graduates, we require most people to complete the online defense and related graduation procedures at the end of this month. In addition, a small number of masters need to return to the laboratory to carry out graduation experiments and graduation design work, to further supplement experimental data, improve the experimental report, and complete the graduation thesis. They may have to complete the defense work in July and August.

Dou Xiankang: Wuhan used to be the epidemic center. The prerequisite for students to return to school is to ensure health. Our school has fully prepared for the prevention and control measures for students returning to school. At present, the procurement of important protective materials, the physical examination of teachers and the killing of students' dormitory have been completed.
We have solved the problem of returning some students who have major scientific research tasks to school, and approved a small number of students to return to school. Because in February and March of this year, at the most critical moment in the fight against the epidemic, some first-line professors raised the demand for graduate students to return to school. We approved a small number of medical and biological-related graduate students to return to school according to the procedures. These are directly related to the epidemic. profession. Of course, this part of the students have undergone strict nucleic acid testing, and strict prevention and control measures have been taken to ensure the health of the students.
When students return to school collectively depends on two factors. One is the local government ’s consent. According to relevant regulations, the local government will give our school a time point to allow students to return to school; the other is to get the approval of the Ministry of Education. We will conscientiously implement the notification spirit of the Hubei Provincial Epidemic Prevention and Control Headquarters, and give priority to the issue of graduates returning to school. The specific time for returning to school will be announced and implemented according to the procedures.

Dou Xiankang: Compared with other parts of the country, Wuhan graduates will face more difficulties this year. On the one hand, the time for Wuhan University students to return to school is lagging behind other places, the time before graduation is very short, and the time for graduates to find a job is relatively tight; on the other hand, Hubei and Wuhan are affected by the epidemic, and the demand for local jobs is insufficient. Opportunities have been reduced, which will also increase the difficulty of student employment.
We have thought of many ways to start aerial recruitment activities in early February, set up online courses on employment guidance, and provide personalized career assessment and consulting services; promote online signing, selection and placement, and the promotion of international organization talent training and so on. For example, share the employment platform with Peking University and Tsinghua University, and carry out the "one-for-one" action for employment and entrepreneurship. In short, there will definitely be difficulties, but we will work hard to let the graduate find a job suitable for him.
After the outbreak, some enterprises in Hubei were inevitably affected. I have also asked the student employment department of our school, and their answer is that this situation will have an impact on student employment, but the impact will not be particularly great.

Wuhan University is a university with a long history, and the campus is also one of the most beautiful universities in China. Dou Xiankang: We have three affiliated hospitals in Wuhan University, two of which (People's Hospital and Central South Hospital) have played a very important role.

They were at the forefront of the epidemic with a sense of mission and responsibility of the doctors. At the same time, we also took over hospitals such as Raytheon Mountain Hospital and Wuchang Fangcai Hospital. As a university, we also have the power of science and technology. In early February, the amount of nucleic acid detection in Wuhan was relatively small. The hospital provided 1,700 nucleic acid tests per day through cooperation with relevant laboratories in Wuhan University. We also quickly organized drug screening and clinical trials, industrial transformation and other work.
It is worth mentioning that the alumni of Wuhan University are also outstanding. In early February, alumni provided a large amount of medical supplies to Hubei Province and Wuhan City through donations and overseas purchases. According to incomplete statistics, during the epidemic situation, Wuhan City received a total of 4.2 billion yuan in donations from society. Among them, Wuhan University alumni donated 1.2 billion yuan, more than a quarter, which strongly supported the anti-epidemic work.
Beiqing Daily: On March 8 this year, Wuhan University sent an invitation letter for cherry blossom appreciation to all medical aid teams in Hubei. Why did you write such an invitation letter?
Dou Xiankang: There are many factors. When I first went to the Fangcai Hospital in early February, I saw a group of nurses from the Guangdong-Aid Medical Team in Guangdong Province. They were very young and fighting the epidemic. There was a fearless spirit on their faces. It was their hard work that saved the lives of a large number of patients. These young people moved me deeply, so it is not an exaggeration to thank them and repay them.
Some doctors and nurses expressed their desire to go to Wuhan University to see the cherry blossoms. With the improvement of the epidemic situation, I invited the Beijing-Peking Union Medical College medical aid team to Wuhan University and asked them to visit the campus of Wuhan University. At that time, the cherry blossoms had faded. I took them along the cherry blossom avenue without cherry blossoms and went to see the ancient buildings of the school. At that time, I thought that next year, we must find an opportunity to choose a weekend with cherry blossoms. The closed campus only accepts medical staff.
