The British and Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix on the MotoGP world championship calendar have been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) announced on Friday.

The GP of Great Britain should in principle have taken place on the Silverstone circuit from August 28 to 30. It is the first time in the history of the world motorcycle championship, created in 1949, that there will be no event organized in Great Britain, said the FIM in a press release.

The Australian GP was scheduled to take place on the Phillip Island circuit from October 23 to 25.

The MotoGP season was supposed to start on March 15 in Qatar, but only events in the Moto2 and Moto3 categories were able to take place there. Since then, no race has been held due to the coronavirus pandemic and the championship promoter, the Spanish group Dorna, is trying to establish a revised schedule which should be announced soon.
