In a speech on Friday, Donald Trump called China's national security legislation "tragedy" to put Hong Kong on the brink. In the absence of sufficient independence, the American president decided to put an end to the commercial exemptions which benefited until now the former British colony.

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that China's national security laws for Hong Kong were "a tragedy" for the world, in a speech from the White House.

Towards an end to Hong Kong trade exemptions

"The Chinese government's action against Hong Kong is the latest in a series of measures that diminish the city's long-standing and proudly held status. It is a tragedy for the people of Hong Kong, China, and indeed good for the people of the world, "he said. He added that Beijing "has not kept its word given to the world to ensure the autonomy of Hong Kong". A lack of autonomy sufficient for the American president announces the beginning of the process of abolition of the commercial exemptions which previously benefited from Hong Kong.

All of the agreements with the former colony affected

"Hong Kong is no longer autonomous enough to justify the special treatment we have been giving the territory since the handover," said the American president. Therefore "I ask my administration to initiate the process of ending the exemptions that allowed Hong Kong to have different and special treatment. This will affect all of the agreements with Hong Kong, from our extradition treaty to export controls dual-use technologies and more, with few exceptions "

Certain Chinese nationals prohibited from American territory

In addition, Donald Trump announced the suspension of the entry on their American territory of Chinese nationals presenting a potential "risk" for the security of the United States. "Today we are suspending the entry of certain Chinese nationals whom we have identified as potential security risks."
