At a press conference on Friday, the mayor of Paris announced that the parks and gardens of the capital would reopen on Saturday. No additional measures to those announced by the government are planned for the moment.

After two months of forced closure, as part of confinement against the coronavirus, the parks and gardens of the city of Paris will be able to reopen. "All the green spaces in Paris will reopen this Saturday, May 30," said Pénélope Komitès, city deputy in charge of green spaces, at a press conference on Friday.

Walks and picnics allowed

Phase 2 of the deconfinement should not start until next Tuesday, but the Parisian parks and gardens will open this weekend. This announcement follows a fierce battle between the town hall of Paris, which campaigned for the reopening, and the government. It will now be possible to walk and settle on the lawns of the green spaces of the capital. "We will not ban picnics," added Pénélope Komitès.

The city authorities seem to have opted for a form of tolerance with regard to health security measures. Wearing a mask, although recommended, will not be made mandatory and no maximum capacity threshold will be set. However, gatherings of more than ten people are prohibited. The officers of the Directorate of Prevention, Security and Protection (DPSP) will patrol alongside the mediators.

In the wake of this press conference, the Palace of Versailles announced via its Twitter page that its gardens will remain closed this weekend. He nevertheless specifies that he is preparing their reopening for June 6. The reopening of the Tuileries and Luxembourg gardens remains suspended.
