Brazil, considered the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, registered a new record of confirmed cases on Thursday and added more than 1,000 deaths in 24 hours.

According to the latest official balance of the Ministry of Health, 26,417 new cases were confirmed in the second country in the world with the most infections in the world (438,238), behind the United States.

Regarding the number of deaths, Brazil registered its third worst day since the start of the pandemic: 1,156, bringing the total to 26,754, the sixth country with the most deaths.

With this figure, Brazil, which is still far from reaching the peak of infections, could exceed Spain and France, which registered until this Thursday 27,119 and 28,662 deaths respectively, according to an AFP count.

The numbers in Brazil are less impressive if they are reported to its more than 210 million inhabitants: the coefficient is 125 deaths per million inhabitants, compared to more than 300 in the United States and 580 in Spain.

Experts warn that the data on infections could be up to fifteen times higher , according to certain estimates, given that in Brazil massive tests are not practiced.

The pandemic is advancing in Brazil in a climate of exacerbated tensions between the governors in favor of the confinement measures and President Jair Bolsonaro, who considers them an economic ruin.

Most states have imposed partial quarantine measures, although some have already begun to relax them or announced that they will do so soon, despite the fact that health systems are in some cases reaching saturation.

Sao Paulo, the richest state and the one with the most cases and deaths, reached 6,980 dead this Thursday and is already close to 100,000 infected, a day after Governor Joao Doria announced an extension until June 15, quarantine, although allowing commercial reopening in certain regions depending on the incidence of the pandemic.

Rio de Janeiro is the second state in number of deaths (4,846) and cases (44,886).

Other states in the north, such as Amazonas and Pará, and in the northeast, such as Ceará, present more tragic scenarios, with a higher proportion of deaths per million inhabitants.
