May 29, 2020 A state of strong psycho-physical stress, accentuated by the ongoing epidemiological emergency following the spread of Covid-19. According to the first investigations by the carabinieri, this could be the reason behind the gesture of the 50-year-old Romanian carer, who barricaded herself inside an apartment in Santa Maria del Cedro last night, holding an 88-year-old hostage.

The woman, after being immobilized, was assisted by 118 staff and then arrested for kidnapping, resistance to public officials and aggravated threat, available to the Public Prosecutor of Paola.

Late yesterday evening, the woman, armed with a knife and holding a 12-gauge shotgun, regularly held by the man and then shot in the barrel, repeatedly threatened to kill the elderly person and anyone who approached the house, to then commit suicide, without being able to indicate the real reasons behind his action. The carabinieri of the Compagnia di Scalea and of the Santa Maria del Cedro station proceeded to circumscribe the area. Soldiers from the provincial command of Cosenza also arrived on the spot, including a negotiating marshal, as well as two SOS teams from the 14th Calabria Battalion for an eventual intervention.

A dialogue therefore began, during which a channel was also opened with the specialized personnel of the GIS dell'Arma. The negotiation, after a long and difficult night arc - in which the carabinieri also tried to contact the woman's son by phone - began to have the first positive effects around 6:30. The woman finally decided to open the door of the house and was immediately immobilized by the military who in the meantime had arrived in the stairwell.
