Since the end of 2018, there have been legal requirements that allow employers in the home service to take care of staff work clothes and laundry. In addition, for over ten years there have been regulations that say that staff who perform "dirty" work are entitled to a place for change.

Missing changing room

Despite this, there is no changing room for the staff at Grubbe home service in Umeå, which today shares premises with several other operations at Hartvigsgården.  

Recently, the staff had a washing machine and dryer installed in the basement, but as long as there are no adequate spaces for clothes storage and changing, Erik Strömberg does not believe that the washing machine will be able to be used. 

Considers that the municipality has delayed the process

In the report submitted by Erik Strömberg to the Swedish Work Environment Authority, he writes that the employer, ie Umeå municipality, "delayed the procurement of laundry facilities and changing rooms". He also notes that there is no timetable for when the problem should be solved.

The chief executive of the municipal home service regrets that the staff at Grubbe home service are currently referred to a dressing room.  

- It is not reasonable and that is why we have added that we need new premises. So it is like a request from us, and I hope it will not take too long, says Annette Johnsson.

"Have shown on need for over two years"

- It is not on my table to provide premises, but to show what needs we have which we have been doing for over two years.  

Property management says that the delay is due to a tight budget and that it has been difficult to find suitable premises in the immediate area. The ambition is to be able to present a long-term solution after the summer.

According to Pär Axelsson, occupational health and safety inspector at the Work Environment Authority, the ultimate responsibility lies with the employer, ie the management of the elderly care in this case. The matter is under investigation and decisions are expected to come next week.
