The English football championship will resume on June 17, more than three months after being suspended due to the Covid-19 epidemic, the BBC announced on Thursday, confirming reports from other media.
Two late matches, including a Manchester City opponent to Arsenal, will be played on Wednesday 17 to update the calendar and the 10 games of the 30th day would then be divided between Friday 19 and Sunday 21, adds British public radio.
The 20 Premier League clubs have yet to discuss the rest of the schedule before finalizing the decision with a vote, but an agreement in principle has been reached on that date, the BBC said, while the daily newspapers the Mirror and the Telegraph also this information.
Wednesday, the English championship had taken a big step towards recovery by authorizing contact training again.
This means that clubs will only have three weeks to re-train their membership before returning to competition, a period many consider too short as it could lead to injury.
According to The Times on Thursday, clubs and broadcasters had to decide between a resumption on the weekend of the 20 or that of the 27, the priority objective being to end the season on August 2.
This therefore leaves the authorities 7 weeks to cram the remaining 9 full days, two of which could be interspersed mid-week, explained the newspaper.
The English Cup final would take place on August 9.
