Both Esmeralda's mother and father are treated for mental health problems during the entire time their daughter is with them. They are medicated with psychoactive drugs that require regular visits to psychiatry. One for anxiety and suicidal thoughts, the other for anxiety and post-traumatic stress syndrome. The mother has sole custody of Esmeralda and the father is written at another address.

The first signals that there are problems in the family appear in early August. The father does not miss an important meeting with a psychologist who would initiate a neuropsychiatric investigation. The mother is described at the same time as tired when she gets her medicine out of psychiatry.

The father then misses another psychology meeting in early September. A few weeks later, the psychologist meets and the father says he is both alcohol- and drug-free. The psychologist assesses him as calm, clear and oriented.

Worried autumn

In the autumn, signs of a mother's feeling deteriorate.

In mid-October, the mother does not leave a booked meeting with psychiatry to get her medicine. A week and a half later, she hears that she and the children had been affected by stomach upset. The mother gets a new visit time three days later. During a brief support call, she says she is stressed and not having any self-time, because the children take all the time.

A few days later, a report comes to the police that a drunk woman with her mother's signal element was seen in the city with a small child. The police make home visits but do not think she seems affected.

One month later, in mid-November, the mother has a meeting with psychiatry about a reduction in medication. She gets upset and sad. She says she has problems and trauma that she has not dealt with and wants help with. The decision to step down is postponed.

At the beginning of December, the mother meets with a social secretary following a report of concern regarding one of the children. The social secretary responds that the mother looks sick and describes her as tired, lean and pale.

Pressure and stress ahead of Christmas

Christmas seems to put the family under extra great pressure. The days before Christmas the father's sick leave is extended. The mother says in a brief support call when she gets her medicine that she is stressed for Christmas.

On Christmas Day, the social service receives a report of concern regarding Esmeralda. She must have been perceived by relatives to be in poor condition on Christmas Eve. The social media and the police go home to the family but are not allowed to come in and meet Esmeralda. Dad is said to have been loud and angry.

On Monday, Christmas, the authorities make another visit and are then let into the apartment. Esmeralda felt happy but her father "seemed stressed by their visit", says the social secretary at the police hearing. The notification is written off and no investigation is initiated.

The mother is described as lean and worn

After the Christmas and New Year holidays, the father cancels his visit to a psychologist. The social service has several telephone conversations with the mother and agrees with the parents that a home visit should be made on January 22.

In mid-January, the mother has a psychologist visit to help with depression, anxiety and crying attacks. She expresses thoughts about the family situation. The psychologist interprets it as complex and describes the mother as lean and tired. A one-month return visit is agreed.

Parents cancel visits

On Monday, January 20, staff from the BVC meet with the family. In police interviews, family members are described as "happy, they did not seem to be affected by anything, were clean and did not smell bad, they looked the way they usually do and gave a warm and good picture of the family".
But another witness described Esmeralda as looking sick on the same day. BVC will book a home visit on January 29.

The following days, the father cancels both the social service's planned visit on January 22 and his own visit to the psychologist on January 23.

On Thursday, January 30, police are called to the family home where Esmeralda is found dead. She is believed to have died already on Tuesday night on the 28th.
BVC's scheduled home visit on January 29 was canceled by parents the days before.
