The new security laws have been provisionally submitted to Parliament in Hong Kong. The green light from Beijing means that the law should continue to be addressed.

The new laws deal with issues of terrorism, relations with other countries, activism and the pursuit of independence.

Protests in Hong Kong

Protests flared up again in Hong Kong this week and at least 360 people have been arrested so far. According to some information, up to 10,000 police were on the streets during Wednesday.

The new security laws have been interpreted by critics as a way for China to strengthen its grip on Hong Kong and, according to protesters, the principle of "one country, two systems" is being threatened.

On Wednesday, debate also took place in Hong Kong's parliament. It was the second of three. Next week is expected to be the last, then the House could also approve the legislative proposals.

Tense between the US and China

The decision is expected to tighten tensions both in Hong Kong, where the situation is already very nervous, and vis-à-vis the United States.

The United States has previously threatened to punish China for attempting to enforce new security laws in Hong Kong, including by no longer considering Hong Kong as self-governing and thus risking losing its special trade rights.
