As is the case in most countries of the world, the Egyptians were unable to perform Eid al-Fitr prayers in mosques and public squares due to the precautionary measures taken by the state to confront the Corona virus.

With the absence of celebration appearances, many Egyptians resorted to documenting the celebration of the Eid through videos on social media platforms.

Many hospitals devoted to treating people with corona are also keen on holding simple celebrations while preserving the procedures for social separation, with the aim of bringing happiness to the hearts of patients and medical staff.

Fake imam

One of the most prominent features of social media users was a video clip of a sheikh of a mosque in Egypt, as he was running away to chase the police, after arriving at the Eid al-Fitr prayer site, where local Egyptian sites reported that the accident occurred in the city of Nabaruh, Dakahlia Governorate.

Al-Youm Al-Sabaa newspaper (close to the government) said that the video is artificial, and that the young man who is running in the video is not an imam, but rather a student who filmed the video in agreement with his friends, in a comic irony.

On the other hand, a (government) website quoted a spokesman for the Ministry of Endowments, Dr. Abdullah Hassan as saying that "Mahmoud Magdi El Ashry, a student in the third grade of Al-Azhari secondary school, tried to perform the Eid prayer in violation of the instructions next to the Nebroo Al-Alawi Bridge, which is an insult to the Al-Azhari dress known to its companions." .

Before the end of the month of Ramadan, the Ministry announced the continuation of the closure of mosques, with the holding of Eid prayers at the Sayyida Nafisa Mosque in Cairo, provided that the number of worshipers does not exceed twenty employees of the endowments, with the mosque not being opened to the public, and that the role of other mosques is limited to operating the feast enlargement. Eid prayers were also broadcast from the Al-Fattah Al-Alim Mosque in the new administrative capital, which is still under construction.

Despite the Ministry’s decision, citizens defied the decision not to hold Eid prayers and prayed in congregation on the street in Awsim in the Giza Governorate, according to what the communication sites showed, while local media reported that a number of them were subsequently arrested by the police.

Isolation hospitals

In an attempt to create an atmosphere of joy for those infected with Corona virus and medical teams, the administration of Abu Khalifa Hospital in Ismailia held Eid prayers, while maintaining social isolation procedures.

Activists also shared a video clip of the Eid takbeer at the University Isolation Hospital, Shebin El-Kom, Menoufia Governorate.

As for Agouza Hospital, a celebration was held on the occasion of Eid Al-Fitr yesterday evening, and a performance arts group participated in the ceremony.

Home celebrations

Many Egyptians were also keen on publishing videos showing their celebration of Eid al-Fitr in their homes or on the porches of their homes, and echoing the takbeers of Eid with their children.
