In order to reduce the risk of newborns being infected with the new coronavirus, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has decided to carry out PCR testing for pregnant women who are about to give birth, with the cost subsidized.

Experts have pointed out that if a baby is born without noticing the infection with the new coronavirus, the newborn baby and the attending midwife will also be at risk of infection.

In order to reduce these risks, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has decided to implement a PCR test for the pregnant woman who is about to give birth and who wants it, with the cost subsidized in full.

Specifically, we will subsidize prefectures and ordinance-designated cities on the condition that we will decide in advance where to accept pregnant women who are positive by PCR.

Nowadays, pregnant women who have no symptom of suspected infection need to be screened at their own expense, which usually costs about 20,000 yen.

On the other hand, for companies that took paid leave to support pregnant women who were absent from work due to anxiety about infection, we plan to subsidize 100,000 to 300,000 yen per person.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare will include the costs required for such efforts in the second supplementary budget for this year.
