The appointment of John Ratcliffe, representative of Texas, to the post of director of national intelligence was confirmed by the Senate this Thursday, May 21, by 49 votes to 44. This appointment contrasts with usage: this key position is usually attributed to an apolitical personality, John Ratcliffe is nevertheless an ardent defender of the president.

" All that interests John Ratcliffe is to satisfy the president, he absolutely does not care about the truth " railed a Democratic senator during his hearing. The opposition denounces a purely political appointment and the lack of real skills of the candidate chosen by Donald Trump.
John Ratcliffe has been a member of the House Intelligence Committee since early 2019, and this is the only line in his CV related to the position he will hold. Republican senators had also refused to support him when Donald Trump wanted to appoint him to the same position in 2019, he had then withdrawn his candidacy.
John Ratcliffe distinguished himself during the removal procedure initiated by the Democrats by his unconditional support for the president. He helped spread the word in the media about a plot against Donald Trump by his predecessor and raised the possibility of criminal charges against Barack Obama. But he pledged during his hearing to remain impartial " I will deliver the truth without make-up." It will not be shaded by anyone, ”he said.
