Contraventions, police custody, "intimidation" ... The NGO Amnesty International denounces "harassment" against defenders of migrant rights in northern France, on the Franco-British border, during confinement. In Calais and Grande-Synthe, around 1,600 migrants, according to the associations, still live in makeshift camps in the hope of being able to cross the English side.

In these two cities on the northern coast, the organization Human Rights Observers has identified "37 tickets drawn up mainly on the grounds of non-compliance with containment measures between March 17 and May 11, 2020," the NGO said in a statement.

"Abusive practices"

"The verbalized volunteers were then marauding or present alongside the exiles, people who would therefore not be" vulnerable enough "in the eyes of the authorities to be the subject of a waiver, however provided for by the traffic certificate", said it worth.

"At the Franco-British border, people helping migrants continue to be the target of harassment and intimidation by the French authorities," summarizes Amnesty International, denouncing "abusive practices".

Four activists in police custody

Between March and April, the associations recorded nearly 200 expulsions in the region and several operations to shelter migrants, which however took place “late”.

During one of these operations, carried out on April 24 by the authorities, four activists from the association Utopia56 were placed in police custody "while they were documenting" the scene, Amnesty still regrets.

"The French authorities must not use the pretext of the restrictions imposed in the context of the pandemic", asks the NGO, to "hinder the action of carers".
