This turns to the hide-and-seek part. When he refuses to wear a mask in public, believing that it “would not send the right message,” Donald Trump assured that he had put on one during part of his visit to a Ford factory in Michigan on Thursday. But no question of doing it in front of the cameras. "I didn't want to give journalists the pleasure of seeing it," joked the American president, who is eager to turn the page on the coronavirus.

Reporter: Mr. President, why did you decide not to wear a mask?

Trump: "Well, I did. I had one on before. I wore one in this back area. But I didn't want to give the press the pleasure of seeing it." pic.twitter.com/KMLZQEFTA4

"I had one in the area over there, basically," continued Donald Trump. "I was given the choice, I put one in an area where they preferred me to do it." But for the rest of the factory tour, he says it was "not necessary". "Everyone has been tested, I was tested this morning. The automaker confirmed shortly after that Donald Trump wore a mask during a "private tour" of part of the plant. "The president then removed his mask for the rest of the visit," he added.

Long distance battle with the Democratic Governor

"Our policy is that everyone should wear personal protective equipment to prevent the spread of the Covid-19," a Ford spokesperson said on Wednesday ahead of the presidential visit. The Michigan Minister of Justice had added a layer, explaining that Donald Trump had "a legal and moral obligation" to wear a mask.

A visit that took on the appearance of an electoral rally: "It is very important that we win a second time, or everything we have done, including manufacturing jobs, will be threatened," said the American president.

Since the start of the pandemic, Donald Trump has been fighting at a distance with the Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer. He encouraged anti-containment protesters last month, calling on Twitter to "liberate Michigan". On Wednesday, he threatened to withdraw funds from the state "if they persist in following this road of electoral fraud" by promoting postal voting for November. The election promises to be close: in 2016, Donald Trump won against Hillary Clinton with only 10,000 votes in advance.
