• Live: last hour of the coronavirus health crisis

When the sun had not yet risen in the city of Madrid, at 5.30 a.m., the Kings Don Felipe and Doña Letizia began their visit to the facilities of Mercamadrid , the largest food distribution platform in the country with more than three million tons of fresh products sold annually. A visit in which the representatives of the Royal House have been able to talk both with workers from the different food stalls that make up this service and with transporters who are in charge of delivery.

During the visit, which has lasted for several hours, Don Felipe and Doña Letizia have been accompanied by the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida; the vice mayor, Begoña Villacís; the Minister of Industry, Reyes Maroto; the president of Mercasa, José Ramón Sempere , and with representatives of the Mercamadrid business network. Precisely the King had already held a telematic meeting on March 25 with representatives of Mercamadrid to learn about the supply situation in the capital in the midst of the coronavirus health crisis.

The representatives of the Royal House have toured this morning the different sectors that make up the logistics platform and have spoken with the workers and transporters who are in charge of the supply tasks. At the end of this visit, after the official photo, those same workers have given an applause to the Kings to which Don Felipe has responded with a round of applause. "The applause is for you," said the King before the end of the walk.

This approach to Mercamadrid falls within the agenda of the Royal Household, which in the last days is making face-to-face visits and telematic meetings with different sectors of the national territory. Last Monday, Felipe VI went to the Fundación Telefónica for the presentation of a report by the Cotec Foundation; On Tuesday, he held a telematic talk with representatives of the cultural world , and this Wednesday he received in audience, for the first time during the pandemic, at the Zarzuela Palace the President of the Constitutional Court (TC), Juan José González Rivas .

Mercamadrid is the great logistics and distribution platform for fresh products in the capital with 511,631 tons of merchandise distributed between the months of March and April , in the middle of the Covid pandemic. For their part, between March 9 and April 30, 477,000 vehicles and almost 30,000 supply trucks have accessed the premises for the distribution of these products.
