A memo published on the US Treasury Department website said on Wednesday that the United States imposed sanctions on the Iranian Interior Minister as part of its latest move against Tehran.

The memo added that the new round of US sanctions targeted nine individuals, including Iranian Interior Minister Abdul-Reza Rahmani Fadli, accusing them of "serious human rights violations", according to the memo.

The memorandum added that the sanctions also targeted three entities, including two prisons and a law enforcement agency.

"The Iranian regime is violently suppressing opposition to the Iranian people, including peaceful demonstrations, with physical and psychological violence," said US Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin in a statement.
