The 2021 edition of the Oscars, the most prestigious awards in Hollywood, could be postponed because of the impact of the pandemic on the film industry, warned the specialized media Variety on Tuesday.

This gala evening, attended worldwide, remains officially scheduled for February 28.

But with American cinemas closed for two months, deserted film sets and the entire disorganized production chain, the Academy of Oscars has already been forced to exceptionally change its rules.

And Variety is now quoting a source as saying that the Oscars themselves are "likely" to be postponed.

No formal discussion has taken place, however, adds Variety.

Solicited by AFP, the Academy of cinema arts and sciences, which hands over these prestigious statuettes, had not reacted Tuesday afternoon.

Last month, the Academy relaxed these rules to allow films that cannot be released in theaters this year to still be able to compete at the Oscars, stressing that other adjustments may be necessary.

To date, the films must be released no later than December 31 of the previous year to be in the running for the Oscars, which usually end the film award season in February or March.

No American film ceremony has yet postponed its date due to the Covid-19 pandemic, even if many have adapted to the situation, by authorizing the presence of films released directly on video on demand platforms. .
