  • A pony and a mare have been found dead with a severed ear, these last days, in a pension for horses, in the Somme
  • Other cases in Aisne and Oise had already been reported.
  • The Amiens prosecutor will request a consolidation of the processing of these cases.

Does a "serial cutter" prevail in nature? Strange cases have followed one another in Picardy in recent days. Latest in date: a pony was found dead on Sunday in a horse boarding house in Berny-en-Santerre, near the Haute-Picardie TGV station in the Somme. With an intriguing detail: the animal had a cut ear, announces France 3.

However, three days earlier, it was a mare from the same pension who had suffered the same mutilation after being killed. The owner had alerted the gendarmes, especially since a fence had been destroyed to enter the enclosure. Complaint against X had been filed.

Butchered in a pasture

But the mysterious series does not stop at these two attacks. Last month, on the night of April 22 to 23, an identical scenario had surrounded the death of a filly, in Quierzy, between Compiègne and Laon, in Aisne. The animal had been slaughtered in the pasture of a stud farm specializing in the preparation of future racing horses. There too, the horse's corpse had one ear missing.

Contacted by 20 Minutes , the prosecutor of Amiens, Alexandre de Bosschère announces to be seized, for the moment, of the two cases of May 14 and 17 in Berny en Santerre. "These facts echo apparently similar facts noted in the Aisne (1 case), but also in the Oise (2 cases), in April", underlines the prosecutor who announces to have opened an investigation "for abuse or cruelty to a pet. "

Other cases elsewhere in France

The public prosecutor's office of Amiens also ensures that it "will exchange with the Picardy parquet floors concerned to propose a regrouping of the treatment of these cases". Especially since Picardy does not seem the only territory affected by this macabre ritual.

In June 2019, a horse was discovered dead with a severed ear in a meadow, in Puy-de-Dôme. In February, it was the turn of a horse from the agricultural college of Château-Salins, in Moselle, and another in Vendée, to be the victim of the same abuse.

"At this stage, no one has been identified and the motive for these facts is unknown," said the Amiens prosecutor.
