The Brazilian Ministry of Health on Wednesday recommended for light patients of Covid-19 the use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, previously reserved for serious cases, in the aftermath of a daily death record.

This recommendation was made in a document of the ministry, whose holder Nelson Teich had resigned on May 15 due to strong pressure from President Jair Bolsonaro, convinced of the effects - to date not scientifically proven - of chloroquine to fight against the pandemic .

1,179 dead in 24 hours

Brazil recorded a sharp acceleration of confirmed cases and deaths on Tuesday (1,179 additional deaths in 24 hours), and already deplores 17,971 deaths, while the peak is not expected until June in this country which counts more than half of the confirmed cases in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In its new directives, the ministry, whose acting holder is an active general, Eduardo Pazuello, recommends taking the two molecules at the first symptoms, in the public health system, and with the doctor's agreement, as patient.

The ministry's protocol stresses, however, that "there is no guarantee of a positive result" and that chloroquine, an antimalarial, can cause "serious" side effects up to "serious failures of certain organs" and "until death".
