China News Agency, Moscow, May 19 (Reporter Wang Xiujun) Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said on the 19th that despite the difficulties encountered, Russia's "Beixi-2" project will be completed.

Lavrov told the media after the meeting of the Baltic State Council held on the same day that Russia had no intention of exerting pressure on Germany on the "Beixi-2" project. The project will not be stopped. I firmly believe that the project will be implemented and that both Germany and Europe are interested in this project. Because the "Beixi-2" project helps strengthen European energy security.

Lavrov said that although many politicized decisions have been made around the "Beixi-2" project, he has the confidence to resolve the "Beixi-2" project within the legal framework. He said that the current difficulties surrounding the construction of the "Beixi-2" project will eventually lead to higher natural gas prices in Europe.

The "Beixi-2" project passes through Danish waters. Earlier news said that Denmark will raise new questions about the project. In this regard, Lavrov said that these will be overcome. The "Beixi-2" project will not affect the relationship between Russia and Denmark. Russia is ready to have a frank dialogue with Denmark.

The 1224-kilometer Beixi-2 project is a submarine gas pipeline from Vyborg, Russia, through the Baltic Sea to Greifswald, Germany. After its completion, it will transport a total of 55 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas to Europe with the parallel "Beixi-1" pipeline.

The United States believes that the "Beixi-2" project will deepen European countries' dependence on Russian energy, and will harm Ukraine's economic and strategic security. In December 2019, US President Trump signed the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2020, which includes sanctions on companies participating in the "Beixi 2" project. The company responsible for pipeline laying is required to stop the construction of the project immediately. After that, the leaders of Russia and Germany expressed their support for the construction of the "Beixi-2" project. (Finish)
