Hackers have multiplied scams with the French during the confinement, making individuals their favorite target. But with deconfinement, it is now (also) companies that are likely to be victims of security breaches.

"They have adapted to the colors of the coronavirus." Taking advantage of the context of anxiety and the fact that many French people were new to teleworking at the start of confinement, hackers have given themselves to their heart's content during the past two months. "Very quickly, we saw the emergence of fake mask sales sites" to "recover bank information", confirms at the microphone of Europe 1 Jérôme Notin, general manager of the site cybermalveillance.gouv.fr.

Numerous attacks against individuals, few against businesses

A phenomenon far from being marginal, since the number of false sites jumped by "400% from the first week of confinement". But at a time when teleworking was almost widespread, hackers also opted for another method in order to extract money: "ransomware, these programs that encrypt data on a computer before asking for a ransom for them. recover". On the other hand, French companies did not face large numbers of computer assaults during the containment. "In general, there have been no major surges of targeted attacks on the French networks of businesses and communities," confirms Jérôme Notin.

Updates required before reconnecting to the office

Nevertheless, cybercriminals could change targets with deconfinement, and the return of employees to offices. "When teleworkers return to their company, they risk reconnecting machines that have not been updated, especially in terms of antivirus", thus creating a security breach. The expert therefore recommends to "be very careful" and to upgrade all the software that needs to be, before "reconnecting on production networks".
