To organize the "post-crisis" coronavirus, Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel must meet this Monday afternoon by videoconference, before holding a joint press conference at 5 pm to present a "Franco-German initiative" , said the Elysee.

The two leaders “will talk by videoconference from 3.30 pm. At the end of their interview, around 5 pm, they will hold a joint press conference and publish a joint declaration presenting a Franco-German initiative, "said the Presidency.

An initiative on "Europe's economic recovery"

This initiative will focus on health, economic recovery, ecological and digital transition, and industrial sovereignty. In Berlin, the chancellery said that Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron were going to meet and hold a press conference "on a Franco-German initiative concerning the economic recovery of Europe".

In a telephone interview on May 8, the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the two leaders stressed the need "more imperative than ever" for European engagement.

Towards a physical meeting of the 27?

The European Commission is due to present on May 27 in Brussels an economic recovery instrument supported by a borrowing capacity of 1,000 billion euros to get the Union out of the recession caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

A European summit must be convened to negotiate the importance of borrowing capacity, the use of funds and the terms of repayments, the Commission was told. "A physical meeting is required given the challenges," we said. The European Parliament will then have to approve it.
