In the DRC, a new attack in a village in the territory of Djugu, in the province of Ituri, left at least 20 people dead on the night of Saturday to Sunday. Once again, this violence is attributed to the Codeco militiamen, active in this part of the east of the country.

The attack took place at 1 am in Djisa, chiefdom of Bahama Nord, in the territory of Djugu. A dozen attackers raided this area and killed around twenty people with machetes.

Among the victims are children, women and the elderly. Seventeen wounded were taken to the hospital in Drodro, an agglomeration located about 70 km from Bunia, the capital of the province. The army set out to find this group of militiamen.

Second attack in a week

This Sunday, several questions are asked by the local civil society on this attack while the FARDC, the Congolese armed forces, are present in the neighboring villages, like Masumboko and in Largo.

The army says it could not react sooner because this time the militiamen did not use firearms. She also speaks of infiltration into the community which allows these fighters to go unnoticed.

In Kinshasa, there is talk of a military reinforcement which should be dispatched to Ituri in the coming days. It is the second bloody attack in less than a week in the territory of Djugu.
