Police on site but no investigation in progress when the Chinese ambassador to Israel died. Du We, 57, who arrived in office in February, was found lifeless in his residence in Herzliya, a posh city near Tel Aviv.

Police officers, including members of a unit of forensic pathologists, were in the afternoon in the villa, protected by a low wall and decorated with a golden plaque on which is inscribed "Official Residence" of the ambassador. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said there was "no investigation into the death," suggesting that the police were ruling out the crime. The police presence on site is part of "due process," he said.

A medical source quoted by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz mentioned a possible cardiac arrest. In Beijing, the foreign ministry said it would only comment after receiving "solid information."
