NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed the alliance's concern about the participation of mercenaries from the Russian Wagner Company in fighting with the forces of retired Libyan Major General Khalifa Hifter, while the forces of the Accord Government said that they destroyed a Russian missile system that reached the base of Al-Wattia, southwest of the capital Tripoli.

Stoltenberg confirmed during a call with the President of the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord Fayez al-Sarraj that NATO considers its government a legitimate government and does not deal with others.

Destruction of structures and killing of civilians

The Secretary-General of NATO pointed out that targeting civilians and infrastructure in Tripoli is unacceptable, and he stressed the need to implement the arms embargo by land and air to Libya and not only apply it by sea.

He added that the alliance "fully supports the work of the United Nations to find a political solution to the crisis, and urges all parties in Libya and members of the international community, to support the process led by the United Nations."

On the other hand, six civilians were killed in the shelling of the forces of retired Major General Khalifa Haftar on a university housing building in the Al-Farnaj area, which houses displaced people south of the capital, Tripoli.

Al-Jazeera correspondent, quoting a spokesman for the Libyan emergency service, said that fire broke out in the building inhabited by the displaced from several areas south of Tripoli.

The reporter also reported that the shrapnel hit an ambulance while trying to evacuate the university building from the displaced people trapped in it.

Russian system

In the context, the Al-Wefaq government forces announced the destruction of the Russian air defense system "Pantzir" upon their arrival at the "Al-Watiyah" air base, which is still controlled by Haftar's forces.

"Our heroic forces succeed in destroying the Russian air defense system, Bensier, upon its arrival at the Al-Wataya air base," said a statement posted by the media center of the "Volcano Anger" (affiliated with the government of the reconciliation forces) on its Facebook page.

Activists close to Haftar circulated pictures - on the pages of social networking sites - the arrival of the Russian air defense system at the Al-Wattia air base.

In turn, the spokesman for the Al-Wefaq forces, Muhammad Qanunu, said, "The Air Force carried out three strikes at the Al-Wattia base, during which the Russian air defense system was destroyed, and three armed vehicles, including an ammunition car, were destroyed."

The government air force has launched 57 raids since the beginning of May, targeting Haftar's concentrations, at Al-Wattia base, according to data published by Operation "Anger Volcano".

And at the end of last April, the government considered Al-Wattia base the most dangerous base that Haftar forces used in its attack on the capital, and the countries that supported Haftar worked as an Emirati base, similar to the "base of the servant" in Marj (east).

Emirati bridge

Earlier, the US Bloomberg Agency revealed that the United Arab Emirates is involved in operating a secret air bridge to supply Haftar's forces with weapons, in violation of the United Nations arms embargo on Libya.

Citing diplomatic sources familiar with the contents of a secret UN report in this regard, the agency added that the United Nations team of experts in charge of monitoring sanctions and arms embargoes on Libya is investigating about 37 flights operated by the UAE in January.

She explained that the secret report submitted to the Security Council indicates that these trips were operated by a complex network of companies registered in the Emirates, Kazakhstan and the British Virgin Islands, to conceal the delivery of military equipment to Haftar in Libya.

Since April 4, 2019, Haftar's forces have launched an offensive to take control of the capital, Tripoli, where the internationally recognized Al-Wefaq government is located.
