"It is essential that we can have coordinated decisions at European level, especially on the infra-Schengen. This is not the case today", declared the Minister of the Interior, Saturday May 16, during a trip to Veules-les-Roses (Seine-Maritime).

Reacting in particular to the reopening of Italy's borders to tourists from the European Union and the cancellation of the compulsory quarantine for foreign visitors to the peninsula, Christophe Castaner considered it "essential" to coordinate decisions on the reopening of borders within the European area.

A meeting planned around June 15 to decide

"The unilateral decision by Spain this week from Italy announced this morning does not support what we need to do to work in solidarity," added the minister. "I would have the opportunity to exchange with my [Italian] counterpart over the weekend so that we can adapt our rules."

This week, Madrid also announced that it would apply a fortnightly measure to anyone coming from abroad, an initiative little appreciated by France, which decided by mutual agreement to impose the same measure on travelers coming from Spain, even if in the facts are that there is currently very little traffic between the two countries, excluding frontier workers.

If almost all of the borders within the European area (Schengen area, European Union and United Kingdom) are subject to restrictions, the objective is to reopen the borders, with an appointment planned around of June 15 to decide.

On Wednesday, the European Commission called for a "concerted" and "non-discriminatory" reopening of the EU's internal borders.
