May 15, 2020 The Civil Protection Canadair again flying over Palermo, engaged yesterday in extinguishing several fires on the hills around the Sicilian capital. The fire brigade teams in action - engaged yesterday in Altavilla, Baida, Bellolampo, Borgo Nuovo and Monte Cuccio - who during the night brought the flames under control despite the strong Scirocco wind. The head of regional civil protection, Calogero Foti, speaks of "an improved situation compared to yesterday, which was - he says - quite heavy". Foti, interviewed during 'Buongiorno Regione', a Tgr Rai Sicilia column, pointed the finger at the malicious origin of the fires: "Gestures of absurd crime, there is no doubt about the malicious origin".
To threaten the Sicilian woods, "there are undoubtedly interests and conveniences that see fires in any case an immediate advantage through the re-use of the territory for fresh grazing or for hunting facilitated by a 'clean' terrain, or the re-use of ex-wooded land through changes of intended use. But the punctuality perfectly in phase with adverse weather events, the contemporary nature of the fires and the careful choice of places make us think more of an organization, of criminal professionalism ". The WWF Sicily is convinced of this, while the bonfires on the island have returned to rage, especially between the provinces of Palermo and Messina in these days of strong sirocco. Mostly malicious flames, as investigators and regional civil protection point out. There exists, the environmentalist association underlines, the phenomenon of arsonists "and some cases will also be attributable to them, but the way in which the fires occur, makes it seem very unlikely that it is only crazy actions. The thesis that whether they are minds with clear awareness and rationality ". It is therefore a "deadly mixture of insensitivity, stupidity, madness, superficiality, greed and shady interests".
