Mouthguards and hand spirit have sold out, and the hoarding of medicines led to new regulations at pharmacies. In PostNord's new e-commerce barometer, 15 percent of consumers said they buy more health products and pharmacy products during the corona crisis than usual.

But it is not just medicine and hand spirits that are going on - pharmacies and health food chains are seeing a marked increase in sales of vitamin D.

"People Google"

Gunnel Åkerman, CEO of the health food chain Life, saw a boost in vitamin sales after several articles on vitamin D and corona links were published.

- Vitamin D is always at the top, but we could see that it increased after the articles. People google themselves and think "oh, this can be good," she tells SVT.

The pharmacy has also noticed the increased pressure:

- Sales of vitamin D have been significantly higher than normal. There have been some preliminary studies on vitamin D and in connection with the media reporting we notice that sales are increasing and also that many customers have questions, says the company's press officer Magnus Frisk.

"We get questions"

The discussion about whether vitamin D levels have anything to do with corona has been going on in several Swedish and foreign media. When SVT calls the Poison Information Center to inquire about how large doses to take, chief physician Linda Myllymäki makes it clear that there is no evidence about vitamin D and corona that she can think of:

- We recommend doses according to the National Food Agency, and we want you to follow the daily recommended intake, she says.

- We get questions about vitamin D, and the usual thing is to accidentally overdose once. It's less dangerous. But if you overdose for several days, weeks or months, it is absolutely compatible with risk.

Can cause kidney failure

Myllymäki emphasizes that vitamin D is not a harmless preparation, and that overdoses occur.

- You can get an increased calcium level in your blood. It can cause anything from stomach upset to fatigue, headaches and dizziness. You can become muscular, confused and have cramps and become unconscious. You can also get really serious heart rhythm disorders and develop kidney failure.

- It all depends on how much you take and how old you are, and if you are unsure you call us. Then we make a valuation.
