Burkina: families of 12 detainees who died in cell demand explanation

There are gray areas on the circumstances of the death of twelve detainees at the Tanwalbougou gendarmerie, according to relatives of the victims, mostly members of the Fulani community of the region. Suspected of terrorism, they had been arrested and detained in a cell of the gendarmerie brigade where they would have died, according to a statement from the prosecutor.

According to a relative of a victim, they were about forty to have been arrested in the afternoon of Monday in the Pentchangou market 5 km from Tanwalbougou. The day after their arrest, a delegation of families went to the gendarmerie brigade to inquire about the news. " Once there, the brigade commander said that no one had been arrested by his men, " said our source.
The families then decide to turn to the commander of the Fada N'Gourma gendarmerie company. And it is forty-eight hours after they are informed that those arrested have died during their detention.
" All the bodies had traces of blood on the head, " says our source, the brother of a victim who went to the site. " It's really despicable, given the way they were killed and without the pressures of the families, we would never go to see the bodies, " said another source. Relatives of the victims still wonder why no autopsy was performed on the bodies before their burial.
As for the collective against impunity and stigmatization, he said he was extremely concerned about the fate of the survivors and recommended a special commission of inquiry to shed light on this affair.
