A man was sentenced to a four-month suspended prison sentence by the Béziers criminal court. He had tied up then threw his dog in the Canal du Midi in March 2019. The animal, previously drugged, had nevertheless woken up in contact with cold water. His barking had attracted a cyclist who had come to his rescue.

The owner of the animal had attended the scene, before retracing his steps. Pretending to be a walker, he then proposed to cycling to bring the dog, alive, to the veterinarian. But the SPA had finally found its trace.

He couldn't stand the dog losing his hair anymore

In his statement, this resident of Agde explained that he could no longer bear that his animal lost his hair. Nine animal defense associations had brought civil action. They had asked for a lifetime ban on owning an animal.

In addition to the suspended prison sentence (and the compensation of the civil parties), the court condemned the defendant to five years of prohibition to keep an animal. "Do we have the right afterwards to have an animal with us?" wonders Patrice Grillon, lawyer for civil parties. A final ban would have been good. ”
