May 14, 2020 Democracy and fundamental rights are under threat in Hungary. This was stated by most of the MEPs in the debate in Parliament, urging the Commission and the Council to protect Hungarian citizens and the rule of law.

During the debate with the Vice-President of the Commission, Vera Jourová and the Croatian EU Presidency, the majority of speakers considered that the emergency measures taken by the Hungarian government to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, including a state declaration emergency limit over time, did not comply with EU rules and warned of the growing risk for democracy.

Numerous MEPs called on the European Commission to launch an infringement procedure and asked for European funding to be conditional on respect for the rule of law. They also criticized the passive attitude of the Council and insisted that it approach the Article 7 procedure launched by Parliament.

Some MEPs defended the decisions made by a democratically elected parliament in Hungary and compared the exceptional measures taken in the country with those taken by other Member States, such as France or Spain.

Fidesz, debate in the EP does not respect EU rights
"The debate" on Hungary "does not respect the fundamental rights of the EU". Andor Deli of Fidesz, the party of Viktor Orban who sits in the EPP speaking at the plenary of the European Parliament, said this.

"The European Parliament must make its contribution but it seems that in the liberal left there are groups that cannot fail to attack Hungary again and again - he added -. They organize ideological debates but do not talk about the real facts that have an impact on life of citizens in member states "and" for this reason Hungary is at the center of the debate ".

A "debate - continued Deli - which was organized knowing that 90% of MEPs who would not have been able to express their point of view would not be present".

Deli then stressed that "Prime Minister" Orban "did not even allow himself to participate, who was unable to participate remotely, despite the fact that in previous meetings the representatives of the left were able to do so. Why is this not allowed?".

According to the exponent of Fidesz "no violation has been identified in the Hungarian legislation" therefore "this debate did not respect the fundamental rights of the EU. It takes us back to other times".
