The Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu intends to multiply the vote by mail in the first Basque elections after the Covid-19 pandemic. The proposal that will be analyzed today with the Basque parties contemplates specific measures to make it easier for all citizens to opt for this voting system with advertising campaigns, extension of deadlines, proxies and even with the movement of Post office officials to the homes of the elderly. 65 years .

The Lehendakari Urkullu, endorsed by the PNV and the PSE-EE, intends to carry out the regional elections next July and from 11.00 am on Thursday, May 14, he will present the content of the four reports with which he intends to achieve the maximum possible political consensus. The Basque Government has included among them a proposal on the specific measures for holding the first elections in Spain during the Covid-19 pandemic . A detailed planning in which the decision to resort mainly to voting by mail stands out.

Urkullu intends to strengthen the templates, hours and offices of the Postal Service under the Government of Spain. The Lehendakari has already secured through the PNV the commitment of the Sánchez Executive to provide the necessary means to hold the regional elections, a condition of the nationalists to support the latest extension of the state of alarm . The Basque Government also wants it to be possible to download the request to vote by mail from the page of the National Statistics Institute (INE) and, even, that this request be made by a proxy or through a phone call by voters with more than 65 years. This group would have the possibility for a Correos employee to go to their home to facilitate the processing of their vote, which would then be sent by any other person.

In addition, Urkullu's proposal includes changes in the electoral headquarters to increase the spaces where the electoral tables are located and, even, to enable electoral colleges in nursing homes to avoid having to move to other precincts. Security measures to avoid crowds would start with the recommendation to vote early, avoiding the central hours of the day, but would also include controls at the entrances and exits of the polling stations.

The citizens who are part of the electoral tables and the representatives of the parties will have protection measures and the cleaning of all the elements of the electoral colleges will be intensified. In addition, the delivery of the ballots at home will be intensified.
