• Direct: follow the coronavirus crisis to the minute

The Community of Madrid figures this Wednesday at 5,886 the number of people killed by coronavirus or by suspicion of having had it in residences in the region since last March 8, representing 10 more deaths since last Friday.

According to the data offered this Wednesday by the regional government, since March 8, 7,633 elderly people have died in the 710 residences of the Community, 1,180 of them by confirmed Covid-19 and 4,706 "with symptoms compatible" with the virus, although "unconfirmed". The remaining 1,747 deaths are due to other causes.

These figures are collected by the directors of the 710 residences in the region - 475 for the elderly and 235 for people with disabilities and mental illness - and transferred to the Government of Spain every Tuesday and every Friday. Madrid has been doing so for a few weeks in response to a request from the central executive to the autonomous communities.

However, these figures are not reflected in the daily count data of deaths with coronavirus from the Ministry of Health, since in this case Madrid provides deaths in hospitals with confirmed PCR or clinical diagnosis of Covid-19.

According to information from the regional government, from March 24 to Wednesday, 14 residences have been operated on - with a total of 1,450 elderly residents - due to an "unexpected increase in deaths." From March 8 to date, 650 users of these residences have died.

In the intervened residences, 432 elderly people are in preventive isolation due to contact with positives, 16 have symptoms and 277 are confirmed cases.

These are the residences Santa Teresa de Jornet, La Purísima Concepción, Isabel la Católica, Residencia de Usera, Fundación Reina Sofía Alzheimer, Monte Hermoso and San Celedonio, all of them in Madrid. And also the Geriatel Rivas residences, in Rivas; Orpea Santo Domingo, in Algete; Sergesa, in Boadilla del Monte; Vitalia, in Leganés, Domusvi Espartales, in Alcalá de Henares; Casa Quinta, in Ciempozuelos, and Las Golondrinas, in Robledo de Chavela.

The Community of Madrid, with 61 cases, accumulates half of the criminal investigations opened by the Prosecutor's Office for the situation created in nursing homes due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a total of 134.

The data offered by the Community of Madrid indicate that there are 1,397 active workers in the 14 residences with a record of intervention by Covid-19 since March 24.
