It is at the top of Hugöjsen, between Köla and Åmotfors in Eda municipality, that Värmland's latest archipelago has been discovered.

In the past, the ancient fortress, which is estimated to be 1,500 years old, seems to have been a powerful sight at the top of the mountain and with beautiful views of, among other things, Lake Hugn. The theory was that it was a so-called defense castle, where the population took refuge if required.

What remains today is a stone wall that extends over 300 meters and is three meters wide.

38 ancient castles in the county

The discovery means that there are now 38 known ancient castles in Värmland.

However, for those who have planned a visit to the ancient castle at Hugöjsen some challenges await.

The terrain is difficult to access and the climb is sometimes very steep to reach the summit where the old castle once towered.

- It takes a bit to get up here, says Johan Richardson.
