  • Coronaviruses: Contagions increase in Germany after detecting outbreaks of Covid-19 in several slaughterhouses

The German Government will gradually relax the controls at its land borders from Saturday to reach full opening on June 15.

The decision was adopted today in the Council of Ministers in response to increasing pressure from citizens and to alleviate the dramatic effects of the coronavirus pandemic in some economic sectors, especially tourism.

Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) has been discussing the details of a gradual relaxation of border controls with counterparts from neighboring states and with the prime ministers of border federal states.

The result of those negotiations was the announcement last week by Austrian Tourism Minister Elisabeth Köstinger that her country would reopen its borders with Germany on June 15. Visits to relatives residing in both countries will be allowed from the 15th of this month.

Border controls with neighboring Denmark, Luxembourg, France, Austria and Switzerland were introduced on March 16 to curb Covid-19 infection.

Since then, only medical personnel, nationals, diplomats have been allowed into the country for reasons of force majeure and, with due proof, for work.

Chancellor Angela Markel will appear in the next few hours in the Bundestag, where she is expected to report in detail on the decision taken in the council of ministers prior to the announcement by the European Commission about the lifting of borders in the Schengen area.
