- It is extremely important to follow the basic hygiene practices. This is the basis for preventing infection and spread of infection in healthcare and care work, says Charlotta Karlsson, hygienist

Report: 4 out of 10 make mistakes

Recently, SKR, Sweden's municipalities and Regions released a report in which they review how the staff handles the basic hygiene routines and clothing rules. It shows that on average 4 out of 10 in municipal care in the country do not follow the routines.

The care team at the Kronoberg Region has contact with the municipalities and helps with preventative routines, training and practical advice on the spread of infection.

- It's a little different from municipality to municipality. One challenge, for example, may be that you have equipment that is carried between different caregivers, so you have to make sure that you do not move the infection. It can also be a matter of having the staff quickly be able to see if a patient is ill, so you can take the right measures such as using protective equipment or isolating the person. Then you have to make training efforts, so that the staff feel safe in that assessment, says Charlotta Karlsson.

It is important to spread your hands frequently

Hygiene nurse Susanna Lundvall shows and explains how important it is to keep hands free of foreign material such as rings and to be careful with hand disinfection.

- The availability of hand disinfection is very important. It must be readily available so that you are reminded to spread your hands, says Susanna Lundvall.

In the clip, Charlotta Karlsson tells us what it is that the staff often miss when it comes to basic hygiene practices.
