The Fen River, the second largest tributary of the Yellow River, is the largest river in Shanxi and is called the "Mother River" by the Shanxi people. The Fen River flows through Taiyuan for 188 kilometers. "Jiuhe" refers to the main tributaries of the Fenhe Taiyuan urban area (Nansha River, Beisha River, Beijian River, Yumen River, Huyu River, Jiuyuansha River, Yeyu River, Fengyu River, Xiaodongliu River), Due to historical reasons, they are black and odorous water bodies, which flow into the Fen River from the east and west sides of the urban area.
Focusing on improving the water quality of the Fenhe River and improving the urban ecological environment, Taiyuan took the lead in completing the comprehensive renovation of the Nansha River in 2014. In 2017, the rest of the “eight river” comprehensive treatment project was launched, which was later collectively referred to as the “Nine River” comprehensive treatment project. In 2017, Taiyuan implemented the third-phase treatment on the basis of the completion of the first and second phases of the Fenhe River treatment, and completed it in June 2019. At present, Fenhe Scenic Area has a total length of nearly 40 kilometers, an average water width of 300 meters, and an average width of 150 meters on both sides of the landscape. The lawns, ground cover plants and aquatic plants amount to 3.4498 million square meters.
