When chance does things right. Last Friday, a little girl was saved thanks to the intervention of two gendarmes in Nesle, near Roye, in the Somme. The soldiers, who patrolled the area, made it possible for the child not to die suffocated.

As part of their usual security and surveillance mission, two gendarmes from Chauny's squadron were on patrol in the area of competence of Ham's brigade. At around 4.30 p.m., the two soldiers were in the commune of Nesle when they saw a crowd on public roads.

Instead of a brawl, they discover a child who is choking

The gendarmes intervened by thinking, at first, that it was a brawl between several people. In reality, it had nothing to do with it. The people were panicked around a 4 year old girl who was choking on a piece of food.

Taking over, the soldiers first tried to slap the child's back in order to clear his windpipe. These gestures remaining ineffective, they then attempted the Heimlich maneuver, a technique consisting of abdominal compressions. But the stuck object still refused to go out and the little girl began to lose consciousness for lack of breathing.

As the emergency services had not yet arrived, the gendarmes continued their efforts. And it ended up paying off, one of the soldiers having finally managed to extract the food stuck in the child's throat. When a Smur team took charge of the little girl, the doctor assured that they owed the gendarmes their lives.
