A protester applauds the staff of the Nantes University Hospital, May 11, 2020. - Sebastien SALOM-GOMIS / SIPA

Even if the confinement is finished, 8 p.m. remains the daily time to thank the carers. Some 300 people demonstrated on Monday evening in peace in front of the Nantes University Hospital to show their support for the medical staff but also to denounce the management of the health crisis by the government.

" Thank you "

At 8:00 p.m. therefore, the demonstrators, most of whom wore masks, applauded loudly before moving in procession along the hospital, chanting "thank you" in front of a few dozen caregivers who went out on the emergency stairs to greet them. “It's been two months since I wanted to demonstrate, from the start, I stayed at home out of respect for others (…) but at my window, there was a banner, my anger it only grew during all these months, "said Aurélie, 35, claiming to be" in total disagreement with the management of this crisis ".

In the crowd, there were very few elderly people, mainly young people and some children, including a pupil of CM2 who had written with colored markers on a sign: "Thank you to the farmers, garbage collectors, cashiers, letter carriers, bakers, truckers , delivery people, medical staff. ”

Lack of means

This rally lasted a little over two hours and brought together residents of the ZAD of Notre-Dame des Landes, a lawyer who came to denounce the "dismantling of public services" or a 28-year-old general practitioner. According to the latter, "containment was necessary" but the health crisis revealed a lack of resources, which she had already noticed several years ago while working at the hospital during these studies. The young woman demands "more staff, more equipment".

The demonstration, which took place almost without any police presence, had been announced on the Internet in particular by the group "Nantes Révoltée" and several pages of "yellow vests".
