"Taking care of nails, hair, etc. is a matter of hygiene". Jair Bolsonaro does not intend to close the hair and beauty salons despite the health crisis. A decree of the Brazilian president included this Monday, these businesses, as well as the gyms, in the list of "essential activities" authorized in the states and municipalities which practice anticoronavirus containment.

The decree was published in an extraordinary edition of the Official Journal of the Union. "I put them on today (Monday), because health is life, weights rooms, beauty salons and hair salons. Hygiene is life. These three categories represent more than a million jobs, "the head of state explained to journalists in Brasilia.

The epidemic figures would be far below the reality

“The one who is at home today, sedentary, increases his cholesterol level, the stress problem, a lot of problems. But if he can go to a weight room, obviously according to the regulations of the Ministry of Health, he will have a healthier life. Same thing with the hairdresser, "he added.

The far-right president, who had called the Covid-19 "a little flu", is standing up against the containment measures decided by states and municipalities, because he considers them ruinous for the national economy.

The coronavirus officially killed more than 11,000 people and infected almost 170,000 people in Brazil, but scientists estimate these figures far below the reality.

The Minister of Health was not aware of the decree

Asked at a press conference, Health Minister Nelson Teich said he was unaware of the decree. He considered that it was a "prerogative of the president", before saying a little later that it was the responsibility of the Ministry of the Economy, but in any case not his.

The decree also includes industrial and civil construction activities. However, it could remain a dead letter, since the Supreme Court said last month that governors and mayors have the upper hand to decide on measures to fight the epidemic.

The mayor of Sao Paulo protests against the executive

The mayor of Sao Paulo, Joao Doria, assured Monday that part of the industrial and civil construction activities continued to operate in his state, the most populous and wealthy of the country, while the confinement was imposed there on March 24 .

"The enemy of the economy is not containment, it is the virus," said the elected official, repeating that he would not give in to pressure from the executive.
