Most young SVT talked to in Västerås find it difficult and / or expensive to get their own home. Despite high turnover in the housing market and increased production of rental properties, criticism is given that rents are still too expensive.

"They are building a lot, but the rents are too high, so whatever you can't afford," says the western ranger Sara Nord.

High pressure on the housing market

Regarding the sale of tenant-owned apartments and houses, Västerås City is in sixth place among the country's municipalities in the number of properties sold between 1 March 2019 and last February 2020 via Hemnet. This shows SVT's compilation. In total it was about 1983 houses and apartments. 70 percent of these are apartments and 30 percent are houses.

But many people we talk to say that the prices of houses and apartments in Västerås mean that many are excluded from the market.

- I know extremely many people who are out all the time, constantly looking at Hemnet and looking and looking, but it never happens. Many people dream of finding an apartment, but it does not happen, says Moa Edestål from Västerås.

- If you have the opportunity for a cash contribution and pay off when you buy, the housing costs will not be that great in Västerås if you compare with, for example, Stockholm, says Anders Teljebäck (S), municipal councilor in Västerås.

Has become relatively more expensive

The picture that it has become more expensive to buy a condominium in the county corresponds well with the co-statistics from Real Estate Statistics. It shows that the square meter price of condominiums increased by 140 percent between 2005 and 2018.

During the same period, the average wage for adults between the ages of 20-64 has risen by 45 percent. During the same period, the average income of young people between the ages of 20 and 24 has risen by 74 percent. This shows statistics from Statistics Sweden.
