In March, the number of reported home burglaries was "relatively unchanged" according to Brå. But in April it decreased by 22 percent compared with April 2019. The downward trend is visible in all regions in the preliminary statistics (see fact box below).

In total, 234 fewer cases were reported than the same month last year.

"It could be a consequence of the pandemic situation, but it is still too early to draw a certain conclusion," Brå writes.

"Two things that should affect"

The number of home burglaries has decreased in recent years. Damir Celebic, business developer for quantity violations at the National Operational Unit, is careful when commenting on Brå's figures and says that one must follow developments.

- People are more at home and there are deteriorating opportunities for international crime networks to steal and move around Europe. The two things together should influence. Then there are always regional deviations, he says:

- Naturally, occasions for crime should decrease, and with the reported crime.

Significant reduction in reported pocket thefts

Residential burglary falls under the category of theft, where the decrease in the number of reported crimes was greatest, 5,891 fewer cases compared to the same month last year.

Regarding, for example, pocket thefts, notifications have decreased by 66 percent.

- People are not so much in town simply. It is reasonable to assume that this may be due to less public meeting, says Stina Söderman, statistician at Brå.
