It was on the evening of February 2 that it started burning on a shelf with plastic boxes at Ica Maxi in Växjö. The fire spread quickly and destroyed large parts of the store. A 19-year-old was charged with suspicion of starting the fire.

Surveillance pictures show how the man came to the store in the company of two girls who were initially also suspicious. During the police interrogation, the trio left different versions of what happened on the shelf with plastic boxes, about who lit the candle that started the fire.

Different stories

The surveillance film shows that the 19-year-old stops at a place in the store where there are flashlights and that he took something from there before moving on to the leisure department. In interrogation he has said that he saw that one of the girls put a candle on the shelf, but the district court believes that it is clear in the films that it was he who put the lit candle on the shelf and that it was he who brought the storage boxes together above the flame.

The 19-year-old, however, is not convicted of a fire because it cannot be proved that his intention was to set fire. However, he has been guilty of negligent negligence. When it started to burn there was a large number of people inside the store and the cost of the fire is estimated to land at around SEK 15 million. Therefore, the crime is considered serious.

The 19-year-old is sentenced for negligent negligence, serious crime and the punishment becomes guardianship.
