In the reindeer industry, there is great concern that this year's prolonged winter in northern Sweden will lead to the deaths of thousands of reindeer calves, Sweden's Radio reports.

The cables are approaching calving season, but in large parts of the Swedish mountains there is unusually much snow left - and without bare spots, newborn calves run the risk of freezing to death.

- Resignation and panic are really the two words that best describe the situation, says Anders Erling Fjällås, chairman of Samisjaur-Njarg Sameby to P4 Extra.

If the heat does not come soon, the consequences could be serious for the reindeer industry, according to Anna Skarin, who researches reindeer husbandry at the Swedish University of Agriculture.

-It may be that the herds are depleted. On the one hand, it will reduce production for this year so that not as many calves can be slaughtered this fall. Then you save the calyx calves that will be re-grown into the reindeer herd. If there are not as many calf calves, you cannot maintain your herd in the same way, says Anna Skarin to Sveriges Radio.
