Will the cradle of the Covid-19 pandemic relive the nightmare of recent months? The question may arise when China reported five new cases of coronavirus in Wuhan on Monday, the day after the announcement of the first infection in more than a month in this city in the center of the country. The metropolis of some 11 million inhabitants, placed at the end of January for more than two months in quarantine, was particularly bruised by the virus, which contaminated in the country nearly 83,000 people and kills 4,633 victims, to believe official figures.
Shulan City Quarantined
But it is not only in Wuhan that the numbers worry. China reported a total of 17 new cases of Covid-19 on its territory on Monday, 10 of which are local infections. This is the second day of a two-digit increase in the number of contaminations in a day. Since May 1, they had stayed at less than three a day.
Among these new local cases, five were identified in the northeast of the country, near Russia and North Korea, raising fears of the appearance of new foci of contamination. The city of Shulan, which has approximately 670,000 inhabitants, was thus placed in quarantine after the discovery of at least 11 cases during the weekend, according to public television CCTV.
Reopening of cinemas
No new death linked to the new coronavirus has however been reported in the country for almost a month and activity is gradually resuming. The Shanghai Disneyland amusement park reopened on Monday while the authorities gave the green light last week to the reopening of cinemas and sports complexes across the country.
