Thai Police have arrested a Spaniard accused of killing a Chilean on the island of Phangan with a white weapon , local authorities reported Sunday.

As confirmed by Efe the Police, in the early hours of Saturday the accused went to the house that the victim had rented in the municipality of Ban Tai and attacked him with a knife. The Chilean, who died after receiving several stab wounds to the torso, was with his girlfriend of Chinese origin when he was assaulted by the Spanish.

After committing the crime, the suspect fled with a motorcycle, but that same night the Police located him and arrested him. The Spaniard, who in his first statement has denied the crime, has a history of theft.

The authorities, which have not provided names, have opened an investigation to try to determine the motive for the murder. Under Thai law, premeditated murder is punishable by capital punishment , although in the case of confession and cooperating with the investigation the penalty is reduced to life imprisonment.
