Gerard Piqué, player of FC Barcelona and owner of the group organizing the final phase of the Davis Cup tennis, said Sunday "a little pessismist" on their outfit this year, because of "uncertainty" related to the coronavirus epidemic.
"There is a lot of uncertainty. We are trying to keep abreast of what the government is saying about sport, and whether we can put spectators inside Caja Magica", the Olympic center of Madrid tennis, said Pique on Movistar television. "I would say that I am a little pessimistic, because a Davis Cup without spectators is difficult".
"I don't think anyone at the moment has the certainty that we can put fans in it or if it will have to be behind closed doors. As the days go by, I suppose we will have a little more clarity," added the leader. of the Kosmos investment group.
The group has signed a 25-year contract with the International Tennis Federation, valued at $ 3 billion.
The final phase of the 2020 Davis Cup is scheduled for November 23 to 29 in the Spanish capital. The first edition of this new final phase was won by the Spanish at the end of 2019 against the Canadians.
Spain is one of the countries most bereaved by the Covid-19 pandemic. The most advanced phase of deconfinement by the end of June will allow a maximum gathering of 400 people for outdoor events, and 50 indoors.
World tennis has been stopped since the beginning of March and until at least mid-July.
