May 10, 2020 The spread of coronavirus in Germany could accelerate as the latest official data released today by the Koch Institute indicate that the Ro index - which measures the contagion capacity - has risen to 1.1, this means that a person positive to covid-19 infects an average of 1.1. The increase in the rate of contagion makes it necessary, reports Robert Koch Insitut, "to observe development very carefully in the coming days".

In order for the epidemic to be considered under control, the Ro index must remain below 1. Only last Wednesday the RO in Germany had settled at 0.65, prompting the German Chancellor Angela Merkel to announce the relaxation of the restrictions and to say that the country had left behind the 'phase 1'. In fact, in some regions schools, shops and playgrounds have been reopened. In addition, restaurants, gyms and places of worship are gradually reopening. However, local authorities have agreed on the possibility of an "emergency stop" in the event that the infections exceed 50 per 100 thousand inhabitants in a week. According to the Institute, this has already happened in three districts.

In recent days in the country there have been new outbreaks in slaughterhouses and in residences for the elderly. The Institute warned that it is too early to draw conclusions but also stressed that new cases need to be monitored carefully.
