09 May 2020 On the correct use of the masks there are still many doubts and there are still many people who wear them incorrectly.

For this reason, the Istituto Superiore di Sanità answered, in a focus on its website, a series of 'frequently asked questions' and published instructions for 'before, during and after' use.

How to wear them
Before putting on the mask - recommends the ISS - "you must wash your hands with soap and water for at least 40-60 seconds or carry out hand hygiene with alcohol solution for at least 20-30 seconds". To wear it correctly, "only touch the elastic bands or ties and taking care not to touch the internal part; position the mask correctly by adhering the upper underwire to the nose and bringing it under the chin, making sure that you have worn it in the right direction (for example in the masks the colored part is the external part).

During use "if you have to move the template always handle it using rubber bands or ties; if you touch it you must repeat the hygiene of the hands; do not put the template in your pocket and do not place it on furniture or shelves". When removing it, you must handle it "always using rubber bands or ties, wash your hands with soap and water or perform hand hygiene with an alcoholic solution".

How to wash them, how to dispose of them
If you have used a disposable mask, you must "dispose of it with unsorted municipal waste". In the case of reusable masks, "proceed with washing at 60 degrees with common detergent or according to the manufacturer's instructions, if available; sometimes the manufacturers also indicate the maximum number of washes possible without reducing the performance of the mask; after having handled a used mask, wash or wash hands ".

The approved models
Community masks, that is disposable or washable, but also self-produced, in multilayer materials: these are the protections for the nose and mouth that, according to the Dpcm of 26 April, can be used, and must be used in closed places or when, even outdoors, physical distance cannot be maintained.
